7 Things to Do Before You Move

Moving can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be. Follow these nine basic steps to ensure your move-in and move-out process goes smoothly.

Notify your landlord

Check your lease for specifics, but in most cases, you need to give your landlord a 30-day notice prior to your move out date. You can notify them in writing, or electronically through the Resident Portal.

Determine moving logistics

Will you be moving by yourself or will you need to hire a moving company? Both require time and planning, so it's important to know your plans prior to moving out.

Out with the old

Moving into a new living situation is the perfect opportunity to purge any unwanted or old items. The less you have to move, the better!

Pack, pack, pack!

Packing can be time-consuming and laborious, but if you pack properly you'll save time in the long run. Be sure to label your boxes so you know where to place your boxes in your new home. Tip: use towels or newspaper, to help pack boxes with fragile items.

Once you've finished packing and moving the majority of larger items to your new home, it's best to hire a cleaning service to deep clean your old place. Are there holes in the walls? Did you hang decorations that damaged the walls? This is the time to fix any minor wall damages to ensure you receive your full security deposit.

Update your address

Set-up mail forwarding with USPS so your mail won't be sent to your old address. Mail forwarding can be setup for one year so you will have ample time to update your address with all of your accounts. Also be sure to transfer your utilities to your new address so you have power and water right away.

Research your new neighborhood

This is the fun part! Start looking up local restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations to be your new go-to spots! Also test out your new commute to your work or school to ensure a smooth transition.

Finally, settle in and relax. Your new home awaits!
